WHAT: New Roller Derby Recruitment Session

WHEN: Sunday 22nd April from 6pm

WHERE: Doug Dean Stadium, Nandiriog Dr, Delacombe

Roller Derby wannabees will have the opportunity to strap on some skates and have a go at Ballarat Roller Derby League’s upcoming “Fresh Meat” recruitment session on Sunday April 22 from 6pm at Doug Dean Stadium in Delacombe.

Ballarat Roller Derby League is looking for skaters, referees and off-skates volunteers who are looking to participate in this exciting, adrenaline-fueled sport. New trainees (known as ‘Fresh Meat’) are provided with all the equipment they need to get up and rolling.  The League can provide skates, protective gear and even teach new members to skate. Ballarat Roller Derby League are mixed gender, so membership is open to men and women.

“Roller Derby is the fastest growing sport in Australia” says Mabel Stark (aka Sarah Hirst), League President. “Although we are the only regional area in Victoria without a roller skating rink, we are excited to be able to provide the Ballarat region with the opportunity to come along and watch a scrimmage, meet our current skaters and find out more.“

Former team mates will turn on each other at Ken Kay Badminton Stadium on Sunday 4th December. Ballarat Roller Derby League's final bout for 2011 will see Ballarat's "The Rat Pack" take on South Sea Roller Derby, a league who has previously lent some of their skaters to skate with "The Rat Pack".

"We haven't had enough players over our last two bouts to fill a full lineup, so three of the South Sea skaters were kind enough to help us out," says Sarah Hirst (aka Mabel Stark), Media Officer for the Ballarat League. The favor was returned early last month when five Rat Pack skaters took the trip to Keysborough to fill the ranks of South Sea's two home teams, The Cut Throat Charmers and the Dolly Rogers.

"As roller derby is still really developing as a sport, it's not unusual for leagues to rely on one another to fill gaps in their lineups," says Ms Hirst.

However, such cross-league camerarderie is not completely selfless. "Through skating with South Sea, we've learnt a bit about their strengths and weaknesses, so we're feeling really prepared to counter their strategies," explains Ms Hirst, "although, of course, they know a lot about us now too."

Tickets for the bout can be purchased at http://www.ballaratrollerderby.com.au/node/26 or from Red Brick Gallery in Skipton St. The event will also feature a junior roller derby demonstration bout and The Rat Pack will be skating for the first time in teir new uniforms.
